Living in Upper Hutt, just out of Wellington, New Zealand, Malcolm Collins originally trained as a boat builder where he developed his fine woodworking skills. Malcolm is a very natural and intuitive violin maker who has made a large number of instruments. As an amateur musician he was drawn to violin making and over the years has produced an admirably large body of fine work with a distinctive personal style.

The back plate is made from medium flamed maple with the figure ascending from the centre joint; the sides of similar wood; the head of narrower flamed maple while the belly is of quality spruce, all covered in Malcolm’s Kauri gum varnish, giving it a very attractive appearance.  It has strong, clear tone whilst maintaining the refined warmth of timbre that is characteristic of Malcolm’s cellos

A super entry point into the individually hand- made range of fine cellos, fitted up to a ‘Master’ standard by the maker with Obligato strings and geared tuning pegs. This cello would be suitable for the advanced student or young professional player.
